Hey Jim,

Not much flying outside yet, still to cool for me but soon i hope. This one has small tanks only 12 0zs but with the four strokes it sips fuel.

Allen, I apologize for the sending of your 310 picture to Bill. Over the years I have built 5 of these wonderfull beasts and without looking closely at the picture- - having had one in that color scheme ,Sent it to Bill thinking it was one of my old models. Gots to use the glasses more often.

Allen,I was thinking of installing larger tanks in mine, the new Saito 1.20's seem to slurp the juice a little heavier than the old O.S. 1.20's did. What's your average flight time with those tanks, 8 - 10 minutes and a little reserve left? I'm still running the Saitos rich and they aren't fully broke in yet, maybe they'll go on a diet when they get a little more time on them.
Same here, no flying yet, but I'm sure getting itchy. I've got the two O.S. .91's in the Cessna 337 to run and tune, so the next nice day I might get to have a little fun. The weekend doesn't sound very nice, hope all the snow stays down south.

JIm,

The other two have 24 oz tanks in them but the way the person divded the nacelles in this one there is no room and yes around 8 to 10 minutes is about all.

Bo,

I guess you are talking to me and i by far like the gas engines the best. they carry the airplane so much better and it makes it a better flier.

Allen, Thanks for understanding! I am in the process of building my G&L glass 310 and am going to power it with G23's- - magneto style. Do like the gas for fuel economy, my last one is powered with Saito 150's and boy do they get thirsty. Flight time is pushing it at 10min, with 20oz tanks. I am having hopes of an all up weight of around 25-26 lbs using the glass fuse. Im not going whole hog with an interior, just simulate windows with paint and fly the crap outta it!!

Something I did to my 310 was install a couple of Ace strobe light kits in the wing tip tanks. I had a couple of those unbuilt strobe kits and thought it would be a nice addition. I made a small p.c. board to mount the strobe lamp on, as the strobe was set right on the main board. The main board and battery are in the middle of the tank, with an accesss hatch with the power swith on it on the side of the tank. I cut the nose of the tank off and used it for a means to shape the mold I made to cast the clear lenses. They each strobe at their own set pace (I tried to speed this timing up a little, but didn't have any luck) but even at the preset speed they flash, they still look nice, especially on a cloudy or dull day.

Too Low,

I got this one from a guy who got it from a guy it very well could be one of your old ones. What engines did you put on yours for this one has ys120's on C&H Ignition. would be a small world if it used to yours.[]

Allen, you say CH Ignition, well, I'll be durnt, that's what I ran on my O.S. 1.20's for quite awhile. They were very dependable and easy starting. My CH units were getting very old so I decided to swap them out for onboard glo for the Saitos, and I only use the onboard for starting anyway now. I remember seeing and buying my first CH ignition up at Ida Grove. I was so impressed with the units I just couldn't leave there without one.

Well guys- getting most of the bench area cleared and have the glass310 from G&L. Thought I would show what it looks like "out of the box"! It does not have the "high brow" of the Nosen and has a stretched nose like an R model. Thanks Greg (G&L), not a nick or scratch on the fuse or box in shipping!! Wife says she will save the box to bury me in! Glass work is clean and smooth requiring a light coat of primer and sanding for paint. Sorting out the formers from the nosen kit, and stacking off the wing parts this weekend!

Now you really have some work to do, glad the fuselage arrived in
perfect shape. Keep us posted on the progress. Have you decided
wether it's going to be G23's or G-26's in this baby?

Allen, The blue /white 310 that I "passed on" to another owner had a pair of OS 108's and fixed gear. Was "Poor" around then and couldnt afford the retracts. I sold it to a guy in Cheyenne Wyo in the mid 80's,and he promised he would take care of it!!

Bill, since the mounts and size of the G23's and G26's are the same I will plan on the G23's. If the weight creeps up over 25lbs then I will plug in the G26's. Depending on the carb distance I had planned on going sidewinder on the motors. If I run into problems in mounting them that way I will run them inverted and pray I dont have any gear up landings. Being that they are Zenoah's, I have yet had a problem with them other than forgetting to top off the tanks! - Have one of the nacels and G23 at the house for fit! Will fit sideways BUT, Carb is against the nacel and muffler wont fit inside the nacel with the head! Looks like inverted is the easy way to go to keep things simple!!

Donnyman, I too plan on converting my Nosen 310 to the "R" model. I know from experience in scratchbuilding from these drawings in the past, that the profile 3 view drawings from Cessna have an inaccurate profile of the nose section foward of the instrument panal. Do not enlarge those 3 veiws and expect a 100% accurate outcome. I would like to make a suggestion. I now use the photos on www.airliners.net to printout and enlarge to full model size to get my profile pattern to layover the Nosen plan. PM me and I will send you some pics that you can use,,,since we can't legally post those pics without permission from the photogragher. Use the height of the instrument panal on the Nosen model= same height as the top of the nose panals just in front of the panal,,,and from that point go straight down to the bottom of the fuse. Enlarge the print to match that and cut it out and draw it on the plan. The critical thing here is the height of the tip of the nose. You can use the bottom of the side windows from a profile PHOTO, of the "R" model as a baseline to scale from where that relationship is height wise. Now you have the exact lenth also. If you have the Cessna 3 veiws, you may enlarge the nose section top veiw untill the fuse width is matched at the instrument panal,,,,BUT,,,remember that the fuse on the "R" model (1975 and later models) is wider than the fuse prior to 1975. So...there is going to be a compromize....I personally would rather have the correct profile, even though it's too narrow for a true scale "R" model fuse,,,,,,but the only people who will really care are the judges at Top Gun.....and there not here....The nose bulkheads are going to have to be "WINGED" as you go, corolating the correct height and width at each station. Too bad I have'nt done mine yet so that I could just send you my bulkhead profiles. But, thats how I am going to do mine, since this procedure has worked for me many times in the past. There are computer programs that can corolate these parameters to meet any spec for any bulkhead station dimention, but I don't know who or how. Maybe somebody on this thread dose and they can chime in and tell us how to make that happen.... Don Sheldon at Don's Hobby Shop in Salina Kansas (785-827-3222) built a fantastic 29% 310 R model a few years back and there was a 3 issue artical in RCM magazine on the build. Beutiful plane......he used CAD drawings. Rick

Too Low, I use G-26's mounted inverted and have run about 6 gallons thru each motor, 12 total, and have NEVER had a failure or even a cough....Go ahead and mount them inverted. The black carb stack can be trimmed to fit just inside the cowl to get your thumb in there to choke it. I use an APC 17-8 prop that turns 8600 RPMS on the ground with ABEL mufflers and it flies about 90 MPH at 38 lbs. RTF. I don't know about anybody else's flying weight, but a 26 lbs. target might be kinda tough.....That wing airfoil is just beutiful. I can float that baby in without flaps so easy.....May I make another sugestion. I used cowls from Stans Fibertech (970-881-2251) 1st pic, for the Wendell Hostetler Cessna 310 R for my 24% Cessna 414 scratchbuild. Along with a 4" Dave Brown Products Ultimate spinner it's a good looking combonation for anyone wanting to upgrade those stock 1962 cowls. It makes a BIG difference in the appearance of the plane. If I could only change 1 thing...it would be the cowls,,,right behind the shape of the roofline....As you get them from Stans, they are pretty close, but I enlarged the radius below the spinner to match the scale profile. The air inlets are scale. The following pics show how I used a pink foam insert glassed in and then reshaped. Rick
