I've been off the forum for a while. Lots going on in life, and quickly approaching retirement. I've been using a 3D printer at work for a couple of years, and finally bought one for home. The prices have dropped drastically, and the quality has improved greatly. I purchased a Creatlity CR-10S. It is capable of building an object 300mm x 300mm x 400mm. That's roughly 12"x12"x16" tall. We have family staying with us at the moment, so I've moved the printer from my office to the RV parked next to the house. I can run it day/night without worrying about disturbing anyone.


For whatever reason, I've always wanted an RC model of a Landing Craft. I found some for sale overseas, but those are $1000+. While looking on ThingiVerse, I found one designed for RC use. That website has over a million 3D designs, all free for downloading for personal use. Here's the link to the files: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2003327

This will take a while to print the many parts, assemble, and finish. But the price is right. I may end up spending $100 on materials. Just started the first couple of parts today.



To save weight, yet still be very strong, I'm using a 15% honeycomb infill on the hull, and 20% on the ramp (shown). While I'm a long way from having mine ready to show, here's one someone else printed:

Just about finished printing my parts for the landing craft. I have a few questions, where did you source your motors, winches etc to make it fully r/c controlled.

Also how did you go about joining the relevant parts, what type of glue / resin did you use. Also did you use any dowel to give the parts a better fix.

No CA for now, you still need your fingers.

I'd talk to Mack Products for running gear. They probably will have everything you need to make your boat operational. As for glue, you need to use a glue that is compatible with the material you're printing your parts with. You don't want to use a glue that is useless on plastics if you're printing with, for example, styrene. I'd check with Tap Plastics, Home Depot/Lowes/Menards or your local hobby supplier. Don't think I would go through Hobby King, considering the world situation and how China is acting towards many countries, just not worth it.

You are quite right about being careful with the selection of glue. Some glue like epoxy that works amazingly well with a lot of materials, doesn't work at all with some plastics.
I personally have very good results using CA with styrene, but of course other than being a thermoplastic that's used for printed parts, I know nothing else about the material's properties and so I can't say if CA would work. It will definitely take some research and experimentation to determine the best glue for the application. It may even require a solvent cement such as the type used for joining plexiglass (acrylic).

This is perfect timing as I have just finished the conversion of the 1/6th Dragon Willys Jeep to full remote control. Had to hand build a new chassis. Also managed to modify the existing wheels and tyres so looks totally authentic.

Have most of the item in my supplies cupboard, servos, batteries and the like. Only missing items would be the winches and a 4 channel receiver. But will be able to source these OK.

Will let you know how it progresses.

Not come across MACK products before as I am in the UK, the website looks interesting. I will see if they can source the parts I do not have already and compare prices to suppliers in the UK
