waynek: Which Robart struts did you use? I like the way yours looks with the new struts. Will try to post my progress tomorrow with some pics.

Jollyroger,

I built it about 3 years ago, so you're really working my old brain but I'm pretty sure they were medium struts. I painted them white and wrapped the shiny part with monocote adhesive silver trim sheet cut to size. I think I filled the inside with silicone adhesive, taped the two halves over the metal struts, then sealed it with CA on the edges.

Structurally they've held up well but the paint is starting to peel in places. If I could do it again I would rough up the plastic a bit (around 200-400 grit, I think) and clean with a slurry of laundry detergent then acetone before painting. I don't think I did that back then.

The machine still looks pretty good, though, and for new guys flying ARF's its a real eye-opener for them to see a real hand-built model flying like this thing does with its piped YS 45.

OOOOPPS!

See if you can spot my drastic and horrible error in that picture...

Actually if you can spot it - it isn't that bad as it's just pinned on...

So far I have theTail feathers and fuse nearly ready:
I sheeted the wings with 10" wide sheeting from Balsa USA, using 3M 77(old formula). Had fairly good success as this is my first attempt at sheeting foam wings. As you can see, I have done extensive modifications inn order to lighten the airframe. Since this is going to be powered by an Axi 2826-10 and 4 or5 S Lipo I needed to remove some of the weight in the tail.
I'm going to order some Robart strut covers and scale wheels as well.
Oh yeah, I need some suggestions for a pilot please.
I'm considering covering mine in aluminum Ultra Cote with some accent stripes sorta like an F--86.
Tomorrow night I may get the time to shape the trailing and leading edges and get ready to join the wings. Any tips?
I used Gorilla glue for the leading and trailing edges as it was quite easy to "butter" the wood with a thin putty knife and then tape it securely to the wing. Works quite well and not as messy as epoxy and stronger then using the Sig Bond as recommended in the instructions.
For servos I'm using Hitec HS-225BB.
Castle Creations Phoenix 60 and Apogee LiMn 5S 3800 packs. I would like to test it with a 3 blade prop, such as Graupner as they are considered the best 3 blade.
Oh well, that's enough for now.
Cheers jollyroger

NICE!

I'm ready for radio and once that is done I'll put the turtle deck in place, paint the parts and then we're off to final sanding prior to covering.

Having a little trouble with my color choices - I can't find lustercote in Tan - they have very few spray colors. Irritating...

my other color is insignia blue which I have both the film and the paint for. Lameness - none of the other colors I would consider doing my chamo scheme with they have paint for.

Blarg!

BLARG??

I found spray paint match to cream-colored ultracoat at home depot...amazingly the match is dead on, give it a whirl. then if you shoot a clear on top, it should stay pretty solid

Watch out. I found a dead match for Cream Monokote ate Ace ,( Rustoleum). But of all the colors that are fuel proof ,the cream wasn't. Better check it out on a test sample.

What's a good way to keep the wing halves together while the epoxy cures? need some suggestions please. I,m using West Systems epoxy so it's going to be a slow cure.

Well, I decided to change my colors and I screwed up the turtle deck so I ordered another. While on Sig's website I ordered some aluminum flavored Aerocote and the Kougar decals that aren't included in the kit. I'll do the scheme on the box I think - somewhat like the thunderbirds.

Regarding the wings - I have a magnetic building board and it serves me well in these situations.

Heck of an evening last night...irritating with things end up wrong and you've got to redo some work. I went to mount the engine to start working on where the radio will go based on how things balance out. Two bolts aren't lining up on the firewall. Hat do fill them with dowel and redrill. Lame...

Well, yesterday I was getting quite irritated with how long it was taking sig to get my my aerocote and my replacement turtle deck. They arrived today though so I'm good - no need to go crazy (crazier than I already am I suppose).

Anyway - hopefully by the end of the evening I will be able to start covering the wing. The fuse should be ready for covering by the end of the weekend. I will do my best to do the box color scheme with silver, red and blue (Kind of like the F-86 thunderbirds) but I'm considering doing a contrasting color on the bottom. Not sure what color it should be though.

I have Red, Blue, Yellow and Tan on hand - none of those sound like good ideas though.

It's been just unbearably hot and humid here lately - it's draining the heck out of me. It's coming along though...

You are in LA? I am in Northern california... I won't tell you its been rather cool here. The Marine layer comes in at night and cools it way down.. Maybe in the 80's...
But on the other hand when it is like this.. its very very windy.. to windy to fly. Even my mew lil Electic Spitfire...

Socal, right on the coast too. It's actually nice outside but my house doesn't have AC and late july/August get pretty stuffy. We're getting a new ventilation system in August but no AC.

Anyway...
