Well, I removed the Axi from the plane, and have a Scorpion 3026-10 on order. The Axi 2820-10 simply didn't fullfill my power needs.Hehe. So now while I have the cowl off, I'm going to sand it down and repaint it to match the yellow trim on the wings and tail.
The weather up here in Northern Michigan has ranged from very warm (80) to cold now (40) so it doesn't matter at this point in time. We finally got some rain which was sorely needed as there have been a lot of fires in the area.
Since I have a CC Phoenix 80 on hand which has a UBEC connected in the circuit, it will be the ESC of choice. Scorpion has a selection of switch mode BEC speed controls which aren't too expensive.
I may have to lower the nose wheel as the plane has that F-100 stance.LOL
Now I wait for my new motor.

I worked my setup a little with more bench testing and some prop tweaking my numbers are:

968 - 980 watts (depends on a weaker 15C battery or not) drawing 68A, 78 oz of static thrust, BLV 13.43 on a worked 14"x12" APCE. I do run a seperate BEC. All stuff from HobbyCity.

I can turn and burn with it. But I usually fly at 50% throttle and get 15 minutes out of the 5000Mah LiPo. My flying field is at 4700 ft.

This thread is really really really long and I'm not techy enough to to search for the answers to my questions, so... a little help would be wonderful...

I'm building a Kobra right now and looking for some general building tips, or links to the tips in RCU.

1. I'm mounting small HS-65(?) servos flat in the wings. Does anyone know how to build custom wing mounts? The servos are too tall to me mounted straight up and down and need to be turned flat. I need to build a strong, custom mount for the wings on this step.

2. The wing isn't sheeted normally, but I"m gonna do it anyway since I'm putting a 46ax into a 35 plane. Does sheeting the wing provide extra wing strength?

Yes very well. The most important things to remember are don't ever buy anything that is backordered, Sign up because you will get deals off all purchases, order about 2-3 weeks before you need the stuff. I have ordered many many items and the only issue I had was they forgot to ship a $2.00 wheel and I don't think I am getting that one. My friends also buy from them and they have the same experiences I do.

If you search around the forum and feedback you can learn a lot. Seems some well known brand names over here are selling some of the identical items with different packaging for three times the price. Between guys I fly with here and myself we have tested quite a few Motors/ESCs/BECs/LiPos/servos/misc items, I have a nice Excel sheet going with all my test data.

Don't listen to anyone who just buys brand name stickers and says the HC stuff is junk. I run the electronics in all my planes and three are 60ish wingspan. I converted a GP CAP 232 to electric, its 5lbs and I can crank anywhere from 900 to 1013 watts no problems.

Thanks racingjeff1. When you say deals. Do you mean, if you sign up for e-mail notification for an item backordered they will discount it when it comes in stock? Or just general deals.

No, not like that. They seem to have levels that the more you purchase the higher up you go. For example I am a Platinum level member, when I spent about $300-400 I seem to have been put there. Now I get a few dollars off the retail prices you see there. I have no idea what levels there are or exactly how they decide on them. Its most likely posted there somewhere. I did not even notice that for a while since the prices were so great anyway.

BTW, they say they will have a Ohio based warehouse to ship products from very soon at cheap USPS priority 2-3 day pricing. I am not sure how long Tower Hobbies can do nothing as far as prices and selection, wow big deal $10 off a $150 order. I saw in there last newsletter they had small Tower branded LiPos, and they were a pathetic 12C output for not a cheap price. I think they are about three years behind HC.

I like to buy misc wire and connectors from HC as well. 1 meter of servo wire and a bunch of connectors for $3.00 or so. I can make a lot of extensions for that as compared to buying one off the shelf for $3.00+.

I did buy over a year ago a Great Planes 35-48-850 and it did not test better than any of the HC motors I have purchased since then. While I think about it, I just sold off my Triton Jr and Equinox balancer because they have a more reserved voltage charge peak than the HC ones do. I was getting 16.34V out of Triton but 16.8V out of the Imax B5, and I could see the Mah difference as well, like 300 to 450 more, so I now get a complete full charge. Look at the price difference between those two charge set ups.

Hope this helps.

Nice looking Sig Kougar. Likely, I can view one of the paint schemes in town at the Western Canada Aviation Museum.

Nice. As you can see I took a little from the very early scheme and a little from the later combined forces scheme. Since it was not scale I did what I wanted. I really like the early pre-Trudeau era paint schemes. I am working on a RCN Sea Fury with an early year 1948 livery.

No problem. I just recieved my latest orders from HC today. When your items do show back in stock, I would jump on it, they can sell out fast. FYI, those HXT9000 micro servos are much better than the Hitec HS55. And how can you beat $3.45 for the HXTs?

Well, Well...I'm rounding the home stretch on my Kougar Build. Monkoting is complete. Control surfaces hinged and operational. The only things left.

1. Mount landing gear
2. Mount receiver
3. Connect fuel lines
4. Mount the pilot
5. Go maiden the Kougar.

With that said I should be finished 1-4 by Monday.

It's been a long hard road since Oct. 2007 when I started.

BTW: I won "Best in progress" for our club build contest.

Oh my God, I had a super successful maiden flight yesterday. This is one awesome flying plane. My Sig came in at 6.6lbs. The OS .46 AX w/11x6 makes this planes go. Close to unlimited vertical. You have to land it with alot speed.

I love this Sig Kougar.

Hey, sounds great. Any photos?

My Kougar is becoming my regular go to flyer. The only issue I have had is the landing gear blocks, I fly off a rough dirt surface and they have both been broken on landings. The old dried up basswood they give you is really poor. I cut new ones from baltic birch 7 layer plywood and no longer have a problem.

racingjeff1...I reinforced the basswood by putting alot of epoxy on it. so far so good. I fly off 2-3 incches of grass, hmmm I wonder why? I know, the person taking care of our flying fields doesn't cut it but once every two to three weeks. Went out today for Day 2 and got 7 excellent flights.

Color scheme is Silver/Aluminum, Purple and Yellow. Everything I paint has that color scheme, from my R/C cars, Helicopters and now planes. if it's an ARF there's not much I cando about the paint job.

Where did you get the decals for the Kougar? I noticed your're flying the Official Provincial Flag of Manitoba on the tail (The small union jack and a buffalo).

Hi Jim,

Not exactly its the Canadian Red Ensign flag not Manitoba Provincial. I made all the markings, the "Z" stripes are monocote and pinstripe tape, all the panel lines are taped. The RCAF roundels and leafs are trim sheet cut out by hand, the aluminum edge is aluminum tape, the fin flash is monocote, the dayglo red wing tips underneath are trim sheet, all the other markings I made using Photoshop and printed out on decal paper.

racingjeff1...I forgot to photo the bottom. I will do that tomorrow when I go back out to the field. It is different. I must say I really like the way the Kougar flies.

Default RE: Sig Kougar Build

Here's a few shots of my just completed Kougar. It's test flight will probably be next weekend as the weather isn't great here today. I had one of these back in the last 70's and it was my best flying plane at the time. Hopefully this one will be as good as the last.

The anhedral in the horizontal stab is strickly for looks. Back in the 70's I was into pattern flying and just thought Hanno Prettner was the greatest, so when I built my first Kougar I put anhedral in it to copy his Curare. So, when I built this one, I just had to put it in again for old times sake.

Not sure what everyone else's weighs, but mine is 6 lbs. 2 ozs. Slightly heavier that the indicated weight on the box of 5 1/4 lbs., but not too bad. I figure the extra push rod for the elevators, the pilot, voltwatch, and the strut cover account for a few of the extra ounces, plus I have an O.S. 50 on it which weighs more than a 40. Overall it should be fine.

By the way, I ordered the Kougar decals from Sig for it, and hand cut every point on every star on the tail (all 114 of them!). It's covered in Monokote everywhere except the cowling and turtle deck, which are painted with Lustrekote matching paint, and the canopy is painted with Rusto-leum enamel flat black.

Hope you like it!!
