I'm surprised by the life of this thread, I guess I shouldn't be considering its subject though.

Regardless, I've been flying the heck out of my Kougar. It's got probably close to 20 flights on it now (I don't really keep track) and the only disappointment is the engine. It's a Magnum 46 XLS and while it will take it vertical forever - it just isn't 'fast' like I would like. Without retracts however going really fast looks a bit odd these days though.

I think I'm ready for a King Kobra with retracts and a hot 75 or something.

Broke Stab...Are you building a Kougar? I'm about half way through. I get motivated off and on to complete the build. I'm building for my clubs annual season kick-off meeting. There a contest for the best build and best build that flies that you built over the winter.

We have another Kougar builder! Welcome to the thread! After testing the Axi 2826-10 with a 5S pack, I realized it won't be sufficient: It's limited to a 4S pack and at 45A, it's way over stressed. So now I have to get another motor. After checking my E-calc, I found the Hyperion 4020-10 to be just right with a 5S pack and 2 or 3 blade prop estimates at 80+ MPH.
With Northern Michigan firmly in winter's grasp, it won't make it to the field anytime soon. So now it hangs from my bedroom ceiling inverted. I still ned to find a pilot for it anyway and finish the cockpit withan instrument panel. Going to stop bt Tru-Turn Booth at Toledo and see if I can find a spinner for it.

I've been looking at my engine possibilities to replace my Magnum 46 XLS, I have a GMS 47 that is supposed to be pretty hot but I've never got a good run out of it. I'm going to try it with some fixes I have read in the GMS tuning thread. If that doesn't do the trick I may look into the Magnum 52 or the OS 55 AX.

Yes, I am I have always loved this little plane
I have highly modified the wings (lightend them) the fuse ( again lightened them).

I have one that is 18 years old and it still flies good.

Submikester, What prop are you running on that Magnum? You might be able to reprop it to get the speed you want. If you are running a 11X6 I think the engine will handle a 11X7 without bogging the engine down too much. If you are running an 11X7 you might want to got to a 10X8 or 10X9. You will loose the vertical though.

Believe it or not I'm running a 10x6 - the engine is new and still breaking in though I think it is about done. I was planning on moving to an 11x6 or 7 in the next week or so. I also have some higher pitch 10 inch props to try. My expectations were not high though.

Try the 11X6 and 11X7 first. If you are using a Hobbico exhaust deflector, get rid of it. It robs a lot of power. Also try APC props.

No exhaust deflector here, I'll try the props but my expectations are not high. The engine is performing well, it is very reliable, easy to start and produces good power it's just not a superstar in the speed department. I didn't expect it to really but I was hoping for a little more than I what I have. Maybe the prop will make a bigger difference. Early on I did try a 10x8 and a 9x8 but it was disappointing.

If I can get out this weekend I will try them out again and tach them to see what I'm really getting.

Put a Jett or Nelson .40 in it. That'll make it go.

My question is how fast do you want it to be? I had one of these planes years ago and from what I remember they are not slow. I had a magnum 45/46 on mine with a APC 10x6 which if I flew at a fly in that had a DOT truck with a display board and a radar gun. This has been about 20 years ago but if I remember correctly if flew a little over 100 in level flight and around the 125 mark diving. I do remember there was another Kougar there what was powered by a 50 something Rossi with a tunned pipe and retracts using some hot fuel. I sort of remember seeing that plane in the 140 to 160 MPH range.

I'm on a roll. Here are the pics of the progress from today. Now I have sanding to do and then to covering.

1. Cowl cut out
2. Fiberglass the bottom and contour shapes at the front and rear. I decided to put the extra work in to make it look nice.

Which engine is that you're putting on there?

submikester...It's an OS 46 AX. Not sure whether I'm going to use a 12x6 or 11x7 prop. I have both.

Which do you recommend?

HeliTB, If that is a brand new engine, you will want to break it in with a 10X6 prop. Then after the break in, you can go to a 11X6 or an 11X7 prop. a 12 inch prop is a little large for a 40 sized aircraft. It will probably scrape the ground if you don't watch it.

Broke Stab -- would you mind describing what you did to lighten the wings and the fuse? Jim

The stab is a little flimsy, even as thick as it is. As far as removing weight, I simply used a large hole saw and using my drill press, yes, that's right, I cut holes in the fuse, then followed this up with a large sanding drum. A little touch up by hand and it's done. As for the wings, it gets somewhat complicated: There is an article in an old M.A.N.(Model Airplane News) about removing excess foam from a foam wing. It was a crosshatch cutout and looked to be a little complex. Hmmmm maybe it was an old issue of the now defunct R C Modeler.
Anyway, Instead of gluing all those 3" strips together, I bought some 10" wide wing sheeting from Balsa USA. It comes in several thickness and lenghts. That eliminated some of the tedious work and only nominal weight loss.
good luck

Maybe I'm behind the times but a 12x6 on a 46 sounds like a lot to me. I think the popular prop on that engine is an 11x6. I know I used to use 11x7s and 12x6s on my old OS 61 SF engines...My Kougar has a Magnum 46 in it and I'm still using a 10x6 on it right now. Next time I take it out though I'm going to try a few different props. Mainly an 11x6 and some higher pitched 10s.

I guess I need to purchase 11x6 prop to swap out with the 11x7 if it's too much for the OS 46. Thanks for the advice.

Flew mine again today, went to change to an 11x6 but it wouldn't fit under my spinner (I hate that). Looking at the prop I had on there though it is actually a 10x7 and not a 10x6.
