I've got a buddy who has said he will give me a brand new rear exhaust OS 61 though I'm not sure which one it is. Hopefully I'll pick it up this Sunday.
Prop clearance needs consideration with engines larger than .50/.51.

Dan, I've used the solderless tubes a number of times and I believe they are the most well thought out method to date. Pete Peterson has come up with one of the best ideas for E.P. flyers.
I intend to get some A-123's and will use his power tubes to make up my packs.
Don't forget to get the silver paste.

Went out again yesterday and my buddy happened to have the engine on him. It's an older OS Max 61 V. Very heavy engine...I've got to do some research on it. He said I could have it if I put it in that engine, I can get around prop clearance issues by going to 3 blades. I did that with one of my other Kougars that had a Fox 50 in it.

My concern is that this engine is rather dated and very heavy.

Why not put in a Nelson or Jett?
For what it's worth, I found only a couple jet pilots that will fit under the canopy. There is not much selection for a Kougar.

Keep it light! It'll fly better.

What jet pilots fit under the canopy of the kougar?

Include the link where it can be purchased.

I don't have the budget for a Jett or a Nelson - simply put.

I'm not looking for a speed demon and frankly I should leave this one be, but he gave me the engine so what the heck.

It's an older OS Max 61 V.
I think you will find the .61 to be about 5 to 6 oz heavier than most .45's and will usually require about 2 oz in the tail.

So it depends upon what you want to accomplish. Heck I have a Kougar that is a pound overweight and it flies very well.

For those that haven't seen or gotten the word, Lone Star Balsa just burnt down this week so A new balsa supply store is in order. []

Helitb, try this one. the dimensions are mixed up on Tower, hight and width.
I had to buy a second one when I built my Kougar, I broke the visor so I had this one to be able to look it up. Basically, any 1/8 scale pilot should fit in case you don't want the military pilot.

I found a website that specializes in pilots and they have one or two that will fit. I will have to do some research to find it as I didn't set it in my bookmarks.[&o]

My Kouger flew with an O.S. Max Blackhead.60, Prop clearance was not a problem with 11X7 props. Nor was balance, however, I don't place the servos until the airplane is almost ready for test flight and use them and the battery to help with balance. My Kouger was a fun airplane! The .60 maybe gave better vertical. The addition of a .60 certainly isn't a new idea. Almost as sson as SIG introduced it people started putting .60s in them.

Thanks for the information. I haven't done much with the Kougar over the last few weeks. I do have a question.

Question:

1. What's the best way to line up the motor mounts and mount the engine? The manual shows the older style and the newer style is wider so the dimensions in the manual won't help much.

As for what jet pilots fit under a Kougar canopy... I picked up this little guy at Toledo a few years ago. Don't remember the vendor... but I've seen him before. Know all those nicely painted pilots of all sizes that Hobby Lobby offered? They all had names? This one was Tom, I believe. I had one of those in an EZ Dago Red back in the early 90s. Saw this one, and realized he would go perfectly in the Kougar.

Anyway... I had to trim some of his shoulders, but otherwise he goes in very nicely. My Kougar is totally stock, built exactly per the book.

Hope the photo comes out; I've got a new 'puter, with Vista, and I'm still learning its quirks...

Ya know, this thread got me all cranked up about the Kougar. I pulled it down off the wall to get that pilot picture, and ended up cleaning the quarter-inch of dust off the thing. She's plugged into the Alpha 4 now; weather permitting, I'm gonna fly the little beast tomorrow. Been over a year since she took wing.

Here's another view...

I dunno, sounds like you need more ventilation in your shop when you have the glue out, Dan. :-) [kidding, of course]

An electron well can run just as dry as a glow fuel tank. Empty is still empty unless the laws of physics have changed since I got my degree.

Steve...Thanks for the tip on the pilot. I actually did a little work on the Kougar this weekend. Once I finish up my two on-line classes I will have plenty of time.

Maybe Dan, but empty is still empty, eh? :-) I think I am going to wait a few years for the next evolution of battery before I take the E plunge.

iliketwinkies...It looks pretty good to me. This plane is my first build as well. I'm about a step behind you. I have to mount the tail parts one day this week.
