The rest of the Rx installation is straight forward.

My installation consists of Brenner V3 CRS, Hacker C54, Spin 99, Futaba BLS servos (171, 173 and 174), Emcotech magnetic switch, 900mAh Rx pack, Futaba Rx. The final weight without main flight pack is 3790g. With a Hacker 5000mAh pack the all up weight is 4990g. So within weight but about 60g heavier than my Allure with exactly the same equipment installed. I think the plug in landing gear on the Alchemy is lighter, but the use of the same mould as the glow version does increase the electric model weight (plus the fuze is a bit bigger with the taller fin and forward canopy). The chin cowl adds weight, but the canopy is notably heavy. It is very sturdy and I think really strong as may be necessary for a glow plane. No doubt it could be made a fair bit lighter for the electric version, and is perhaps an area for future consideration.

The factory appear to have done a really good job where it really matters. Both wings look to be 0.6deg positive to the canopy line, and install very nicely. I have set the stabs zero to the canopy line reference, and will fine tune them as I trim her out. The alignment of the wings, stab and fin looks spot on. That is something I am very pleased about as it has a huge impact on how the plane flies and is very difficult to fix if the factory got it wrong. Clearly the major effort Bryan spend on training the Extreme factory staff (and associated quality control) is paying off.

No pattern plane is complete without some personal branding. She looks really good....I love the color scheme and expect it will present very nicely in the air.

So the Alchemy is ready to have her first flights. The maiden will be on Saturday, and I'll revert with feedback on flight characteristics. I'm expecting great results and a very quick process to have her trimmed in accordance with Bryan's recommended CG etc. I'll only install wing adjusters if need be, and I don't expect that I will need to.

Oh, also running the throttle tech speed control adjustment system, and I lightened the heatsink of the Spin 99.

The first flights on a plane generally tell a lot in terms of the quality of the design and the amount of trimming that will be required. I'm very pleased with the first flights on the Alchemy. I started with the CG just back of the rear edge of the wing tube. She needed a little left aileron trim, and immediately felt extremely comfortable. A push to the wheels on left rudder KE, so I moved the CG forward a bit, and after trimming for straight upright and up-line, there is perhaps still a very slight push on left rudder. But it was windy so not ideal conditions to trim. The rudder aileron coupling is really good. On the second flight it did a vertical KE figure eight, with no roll coupling. Only at full rudder doing very aggressive KE corners is there a slight proverse roll coupling (rolls opposite direction to rudder). Its a very small coupling, and the Alchemy is by far the best coupling design that I have flown. With some further trimming and tweaking of the stab alignment I may even be able to get rid of that. Spins are great and the rotation stops nicely. Snaps are very nice. The slightly bigger aileron and thinner wing tips (as compared to the Allure) certainly improve the ability to do fast snaps in all attitudes. She tracks and rolls beautifully. Feels similar to the Allure (as one would expect). The rudder is powerful, and she pivots on the CG very nicely in stall turns.

The stock factory wing incidences seem to work very well. I will make a very small adjustment on one wing to remove the little bit of aileron trim. Certainly no need for wing incidence adjusters.

I know this is a design that will get to the fine tuned trimming very quickly. New planes take a bit of time to get used to, to learn, and to over some time really get to see what issues they may have. It will be interesting to report back in time once I've had more flights and learn her habits. But what I can confirm at this stage is that the Alchemy really is a very low mix design, with ample rudder power and excellent yaw damping and stability. Works really well with the contra-drive. I flew two P-19 schedules and the Alchemy really made it easy. Looking forward to doing some more challenging things in the F-19.

Bryan congrats on an excellent design. This takes the Allure another notch up.

How do you plan on adjusting wing incidence without adjusters installed??

Fix your stab alignment before adjusting your wing incidence.

Cheers,
Jason.

Hi guys. Small adjustments in the wing inc can be done by sanding down the donuts that the wing pins fit into, and building up the other side with some glue. As the aileron trim is small it will be a small adjustment.
Yes the stab alignment will also impact it. In this case I expect the stab alignment for straight KE may result in increased ail trim as I expect I may need to reduce the incidence on the right stab.
Either way its small adjustments.

The trim will be in your stabs. By all means check the wing incidence but leave it alone for the minute.

Last weekend was foam cutting time. These are Alchemy wings which will be fitted to an Allure builders kit.
We cut the templates out of formica on my CNC router. The actual foam cutter is a feathercut style unit.

We also made a fixture for boring the socket, extension and anti rotation pin holes accurately.

Cheers,
Jason.

Hi guys,
Got mine up and flying, and having fun with it!
The motor does run quite hot, it is better now that that I have installed some baffles around it.
Has anyone cut additional cooling exit holes in the fuse? And if so, where??

Cheers, Chris

Ralph Schweizer did this with his Allure: RS-Page

The same could be done with the Alchemy to improve cooling.

Cheers,
Jason.

Thanks Jason,

I put some much simpler baffles in - he has done a professional job!!

Just worried whether the slots in the sides are big enough as exit holes.

Cheers

Default Yellow Base

I have a couple of yellow base Alchemy’s coming downunder. I thought I’d post a couple of pictures showing everyone what the model looks like in Yellow. Nice! One is EP and the other GP. The GP doesn’t have the “Gill” vents cut out on the side and has the spring clips fitted to the chin cowl.

Cheers,
Jason.

Hamish,

Any news on the flight performance of the Allue bipe yet? How are you liking the new YS200? This is a combination I am considering running in 2018.

Thanks,

Bill H.

Hi Bill, we are getting closer with the bipe but haven’t spent as much time in the workshop as I would have hoped lately..

The 200 is a beast of a motor with massive power.. A bit different from the 185 as the settings are more critical.. I’m starting to feel more relaxed with it now.. the 185 is nearly as easy as electric, the 200 I’ve found needs to run under a turn on the main needle to make it happy. I can’t believe the power it delivers, just crazy!

best Regards Hamish

Default It’s Alchemy!

Hi Guys,

It’s been a while since I last posted anything about the Alchemy. Well, after a long wait my Alchemy order has finally arrived.

Here are some pictures:

Some build pictures to follow shortly.

Cheers,
Jason.

Default Mohawk is the choice!

I'm actually without a flyable airframe at the minute due to selling my Allure. I’ve decided to build the orange Mohawk Alchemy to replace the Allure.

I’ve started on the assembly/build. Servos will be MKS HV6130H (23 grams each) on the elevators and MKS HV747 on the Ailerons. The rudder will use an MKS HV1220. Last night I made the elevator servo plates which get glued into the stabs and also the aileron reduction plates. These will be glued under the existing plates in the wings hence being two piece is get in the current opening. BTW, Bryan has improved the aileron cutouts/servo mounting point over the Allure. Much better finish IMHO.

I’ve also laminated the lite Ply rudder servo tray, added a Servo doubler and 1/4” x 1/4” balsa to stiffen the whole rudder plate up. Managed to leave half the skin from my fingers on the tray too. Ah the joys of CA.

Cheers,
Jason.

Default Pull Pull Complete

Hi Guys,

A little more progress on the Alchemy over the weekend. The rudder tray is now glued in as are the carbon rudder horns. Cable exits have been cut and cables installed.

Next task will be installing the Ralph Schweizer CRS/C54 drive system.

Cheers,
Jason.

Default CRS Install

I’ll be fitting the Ralph Schweizer CRS/C54 contra drive system to the Alchemy.

To get the drive/spinner spacing correct, the factory fitted fibreglass nose ring needed to be removed. Time for a dremel party! Once removed, the CRS plywood nose ring can then be fitted to the nose instead. Plywood is also quieter than composites such as fibreglass or carbon fibre. Note, the firewall will be fitted inside the fuse. It’s only on the outside to align and mark/drill the holes.Ralph makes a nice little jig for aligning the nose ring thrust. It’s basically a 4mm ply disc with holes in it.

Cheers,
Jason.

These pictures show the alignment jig and firewall secured in place with M4 screws and nuts. The Firewall is between the back of the fuse nose and the alignment jig. The steel rod through the middle is used to set the side thrust to 0 degrees. A digital angle gauge is used to check the down thrust setting. To adjust the thrust line, shim washers will be placed between the firewall and back of the nose ring. These will be left in place permanently whilst gluing the firewall in.

Cheers,

Default Maiden this week?

The wings and stabs are now completed. The CRS Mount is basically done too apart from some carbon reinforcement to be added.

Default Undercarriage Box

The Alchemy has a different UC setup. The tongue that screws to the fuse is now straight and tapered. The leg inserts into a carbon socket assembly that is glued into the fuse with epoxy and microballoons. The leg is retained by just one screw. As a precaution, I have added carbon cloth around the UC box assembly. IMHO a little carbon around this area is a good investment for any F3A model.

Jason,

Question: Would it be possible to get an Allure Bipe in this color configuration?

Thanks,
